Fundation Letter Chart

Fundations Information for Families:

Fundations for Kindergarten
In kindergarten, the focus is on mastering letter-sound relationships and building an awareness of the sound structure of words.
  • Alphabet skills: Students learn to name, recognize, and write all uppercase and lowercase letters.
  • Phonological awareness: They practice segmenting spoken sentences into words and words into syllables.
  • Phonemic awareness: Aided by multisensory techniques like "tapping," students learn to segment and blend the individual sounds (phonemes) in CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words.
  • Word study: Students learn the sounds for basic consonant digraphs like "sh," "ch," "th," "wh," and "ck".
  • "Trick words": They are introduced to the first set of high-frequency, irregularly spelled words (e.g., the, was, of).
  • Handwriting: Correct manuscript letter formation is taught using specific verbal cues and the "sky line" format.
  • Sentence skills: Basic capitalization for names and the start of sentences, as well as ending punctuation, are introduced.
Fundations for First Grade
First grade reviews and expands upon kindergarten skills, introducing more complex word structures.
  • Phonemic awareness: Students progress to blending and segmenting words with up to five sounds.
  • Advanced phonics: They learn about more complex word structures, including blends (e.g., "bl," "st"), vowel-consonant-e syllables (e.g., game), and R-controlled vowels (e.g., car).
  • Syllable division: Students begin reading and spelling two-syllable compound words by breaking them into syllables.
  • Suffixes: The curriculum introduces the common suffixes "-s," "-es," "-ed," and "-ing" when added to base words.
  • Increased word study: The program covers glued sounds like "all," "am," and "an," as well as "ng" and "nk" endings.
  • Trick words: Students work toward reading and spelling approximately 100 high-frequency words.
  • Reading comprehension: They begin retelling stories and distinguishing between narrative and informational texts.
Fundations for Second Grade
In second grade, the program builds on earlier lessons by delving into more advanced word and sentence structure.
  • Syllable types: Students learn all six syllable types: closed, vowel-consonant-e, open, R-controlled, vowel team, and consonant-le.
  • Advanced phonics: The curriculum covers complex vowel teams (e.g., ai, ay, ee, oi, oy, ow) and words with unexpected vowel sounds (e.g., old, ind).
  • Multisyllabic words: Students learn how to read and spell longer words and identify parts of words like basewords, suffixes, and prefixes (e.g., un-, dis-, mis-).
  • Fluency: Goals include reading at an appropriate rate with expression and understanding.
  • Vocabulary: Students practice using sentence context to determine word meaning, identifying synonyms, and using basic dictionary skills.
  • Reading comprehension: They learn to answer "who, what, where, when, why, and how" questions and identify the main topic of an informational text.
  • Writing mechanics
