Dear EHPS Community,

As we welcome the beautiful autumn season, it's important to remember that October is Fire Prevention Month. Fire Drills are part of our school safety plans that are reviewed monthly in EHPS. Additionally, our local Fire Department will be out and about visiting schools and talking with students about the importance of fire safety.

In that spirit, here are five considerations to reduce the risk of fires and keep your home safe:
  1. Check Smoke Alarms: Check your smoke alarms, and change the batteries, if necessary, so they are ready to alert you in case of a fire.
  2. Create a Fire Escape Plan: Develop and practice a fire escape plan with your family so everyone knows how to exit your home safely and where to meet outside in case of a fire.
  3. Kitchen Safety: Unattended cooking is a leading cause of house fires. Always stay in the kitchen while cooking, and keep flammable items away from the stove.
  4. Candles: Use candles with caution, and never leave them unattended. Consider using battery-operated LED candles as a safer alternative.
  5. Electrical Safety: Inspect your electrical cords and outlets for damage. Avoid overloading outlets with too many devices.
  6. Lithium Ion Batteries: Most electronics used in homes are powered by lithium-ion batteries. These batteries can overheat, start a fire or explode if overcharged or damaged.

Thank you for partnering with us to protect your home and family from the devastating effects of fires. Visit this link for support in developing a fire safety plan for your home to help keep you and your loved ones safe.

In partnership,
Adam Swinney, Interim Superintendent

Athletic Spotlight

Alessandra Borzillo

We are proud to recognize Alessandra Borzillo as our Spotlight Athlete. Alessandra has been a part of the East Haven soccer community for many years, beginning with town programs, continuing through middle school, and now competing at the high school level. Her passion for the game has grown steadily, shaped by the influence of her aunt Bethany, who first introduced her to the sport. “My aunt always played with me when I was younger and has always been my role model pushing me to do my best,” Alessandra shared. That inspiration has carried into her own journey, where she now leads as a team captain for East Haven High School soccer.

For Alessandra, leadership means much more than wearing the captain’s band. “Being a captain is being a leader and a good role model. People are always looking up to you, cheering for you to do your best, and that helps push them to do their best. No matter how much you struggle, you have to push through not just for yourself, but for your teammates too. Being a captain can be a lot, but it’s a privilege, so I’m grateful for what I’ve got.”

Soccer has also given Alessandra perspective beyond wins and losses. “Soccer has taught me that mess ups are just moments closer to success. They are the first step of second chances—to learn from and be greater.” Alessandra continues to embody the values of commitment, resilience, and leadership that make her such a strong representative of East Haven Athletics. We congratulate her on being named our Spotlight Athlete!

Attendance Matters

attendance
Strong attendance is directly tied to academic success. Please help us by making school attendance a top priority for your child. Missing more than 2 days of school per month places a student in the category of being chronically absent—something we work hard to prevent, since attendance impacts learning at every stage of a child’s education.

Help your child succeed in school by building the habit of good attendance early. Visit this link for helpful tips on building healthy attendance habits as early as Pre-K and Kindergarten.

Keep your child on track in middle school and high school and help your teen stay engage. Visit this link to learn what you can do.

Let’s partner together to ensure that every child attends school regularly and has the best possible opportunity to achieve.
